Furniture and home decor shop

Small shop selling stocked compact furniture and decor, without bespoke sofas, installation, heavy delivery or client deposits.

A retailer arranges small furniture and decorative objects.

What this template helps you prepare

The shop sells objects and small furniture for customers to take away. A curated selection fits limited space with replenishment stock. The example operates neither a large warehouse nor a delivery team and charges no interior design fees.

Assess demand

Compare baskets by object type and check traffic suited to the premises. IKEA illustrates competition in small furniture, not supplier pricing for an independent. Test positioning on specific products before committing stock.

The figures

A fictional case to explain the calculations. The amounts below are neither industry averages nor profitability targets.

Sales over 12 months
€111,500
Profit over 12 months
€4,529
Lowest cash balance over 36 months, before the deposit reserve
€21,150

The director’s planned remuneration

The result in this example assumes lower remuneration at startup, followed by increases according to the schedule below.

Months 1 to 3
€350 gross per month
Months 4 to 6
€650 gross per month
Months 7 to 12
€1,000 gross per month
Months 13 to 36
€1,600 gross per month

Year 1: €9,000 gross paid to the director, costing the business €13,050 with the assumed employer contributions.

These amounts are before employee contributions and personal income tax. The director’s personal budget and the resources to cover it during startup must be planned separately; no benefits are assumed.

Understand this example’s assumptions

Stock also occupies floor space

A few furniture items can fill storage before the stock budget is exhausted. Match range choices to value, volume and collection practicality. A bulk discount helps only when premises and cash can support it.

Delivery changes the business and budget

The scenario sells take-away goods. Promising delivery adds vehicles, handling, slots and damage at customers’ homes. These costs cannot be absorbed in average advice time; adding delivery requires rebuilding the case.

The assumptions behind the figures

Pricing and average sale

€100 excluding VAT per unit is the example price. The chosen €120 VAT-inclusive basket mixes small furniture and decor. IKEA side-table prices compare products; they establish neither the shop’s basket nor purchase costs.

Volume and ramp-up

The schedule assumes 1115 units in year one, from 55 in the first month to a monthly maximum of 150 over 36 months. Replace these assumed sales with orders, bookings or local counts. Baskets grow with the shop and year-end gifting; no large-furniture orders are assumed.

Sales-related costs

€52 excluding VAT per unit is a direct-cost budget without an obtained supplier quote. Chosen costs must cover purchase, inbound freight and routine packaging. A variable allowance adds damage and markdowns; advance replenishment is not calculated item by item. The example adds card fees of 1.75% of VAT-inclusive sales on all receipts using the SumUp comparison; no negotiated rate is assumed.

Time and production capacity

The example reserves 20 minutes per unit within 120 monthly hours of direct capacity. Remaining time must cover administration, prospecting and absences; check the weekly schedule before adopting the limit. Basket time reserves advice and routine collection; pallet receipt, shelving and opening need separate slots.

The parameters that matter

Before using the template figures, check how these points apply to your project.

  1. Can the premises display and store the whole range?

  2. Which freight costs and minimums apply?

  3. Can customers take the sold items away?

Scope to keep in mind

Physical retail of compact take-away goods without heavy delivery, custom work, installation or deposits. Recalculate space, logistics and funding before widening scope.
